Shepherd's hut in Cornwall: This romantic shepherd's hut has rolled to a stop in the perfect destination. It's great for coast and countryside alike, an irresistible getaway for two…and maybe a canine companion as well.
What's so good about this fabulous glamping retreat? We hardly know where to start. Hidden down a quiet country lane, it sits in gently rolling, wooded countryside, overlooking a pretty pond, with sheep grazing in the next-door pasture and ducks and geese nearby. Quiet and peaceful, it's the ideal place to commune with nature, yet it's just a ten-minute walk from Lerryn, one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall (so much so that it has been used as a Rosamunde Pilcher filming location!), where you'll find a charming (and handy) shop and a welcoming inn, one of the Independent's 'top 50 pubs of Great Britain'.
Step inside and Shepherd's Rest is just as impressive, demonstrating the owners' attention to detail in every nook and cranny. From the reclaimed floorboards to the panelled ceiling, the bespoke fitted kitchen to the stylish shower-room, everything has been made to the highest quality, creating a luxury destination that's full of character. French doors lead to the open-plan space, with a double bed at one end (a Hypnos mattress and quality linens will ensure a good night's sleep), and two windows for peaceful gazing at the meadow, ponds and countryside beyond. There's plenty of storage below the bed and a wall-mounted TV at the foot, just in case you want to keep up with the news or watch a movie or two. At the opposite end is the door to the shower-room, with running hot and cold water, proper flushing WC, wash-basin and trendy copper pipework and heated towel rail. In between you'll find the beautifully finished kitchen, with a dinky fridge/freezer, gas cooker, oak worktops and a breakfast bar with high wooden stools for enjoying tasty treats. There's also a toasty wood-burner, complete with logs, providing a cosy space to sit whatever the weather's doing outside, while sublime finishing touches include upcycled lights, designer fabrics and shepherd's crooks ornaments. There's even a miniature shepherd's hut dog kennel just next door and hand outside mixer tap, should you decide to bring your four-legged friend on holiday.
Outside, it's sheer bliss. Cook up a yummy supper on the gas barbecue. Lie back on the loungers and drink in some sunshine while listening to birdsong and the breeze in the trees. Bring your rods and fish the ponds, which are well stocked. The chiminea will keep you warm while watching the stars come out one by one in the vast night sky. Simply perfect.
Out and About
Half a mile down the hill from Shepherd's Rest and you'll find yourself in the cute village of Lerryn, with its quaint stepping stones over the river, 16th Century pub and friendly village stores. There are some superb walks around here, or you can go by paddle power and hire a kayak to explore this beautiful estuary and its inlets. It's a short drive to Fowey, for boutique shops and a range of places to eat, Cardinham Woods, with its miles and miles of cycle trails, and Polkerris Beach, where you'll find a pub, cafe, gallery and restaurant. The impressive National Trust estate of Lanhydrock is very close, as is the antiques town of Lostwithiel and the hilltop castle ruins of Restormel, and it's not much further for the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan or the historic harbour of Charlestown (Poldark!). That said, if you don't feel like venturing far, there's often something going on in Lerryn, whether it's a sailing festival, fair, art exhibition or simply quiz night in the pub. What you can always be sure of is a good helping of Cornish hospitality.
