Glamping in Cornwall: Our showman's wagon is a sight for sore eyes. Roll up, roll up! Don't miss the unique style and comfort of Sanger's.
We guarantee that you'll never have seen anything like this before. The wondrous Sanger's Showman's Wagon, lovingly refurbished for modern glamping enjoyment. Mind you, it was pretty high up on comfort levels to start with - the first of its style ever built, these fairground living-wagons were known as 'palaces on wheels' because they were so ornately decorated and beautifully made. Sanger's was bought by its current owners from a retired fairground showman who, like his mother, was born in the wagon. It's the real deal!
What's inside? Well, there's a spacious living/dining area with heaps of storage space and a real fireplace, all made from original Edwardian mahogany with carved details and painted ceiling panels, complemented by opaque glass light fittings, flouncy curtains and a cute wood-burner for a warming welcome whatever the weather. There's even a kettle and a small fridge conveniently hidden in a cupboard. Next door, the prettiest double bedroom, piled with pillows and a rose-strewn quilt, is covered from floor to ceiling with scrolling paintwork in exquisite blues and pinks. Is it a teeny bit over the top? Yes. Do we love it? Absolutely.
This sublime wagon is set in a pretty, tree-lined meadow, home to Halcyon and Hobson the very friendly Exmoor ponies, and surrounded by lovely countryside views. Just across from Sanger's is an extra surprise: a pretty little painted-timber cabin. Double-glazed and insulated, it features a kitchen/dining area with an electric cooker (two ring hob and mini oven), microwave, fridge (with an ice box for those G&T's), kettle and toaster - all you need, in fact, to cook a slap-up supper - plus a separate shower-room with a double shower, WC, wash-basin and heated towel rail. This is luxury camping 21st Century style, after all. Right behind Sanger's there's also another handy undercover WC and wash-basin, and outside there's a seating area and a chimenea BBQ, in case you feel like sizzling some sausages or tasting marshmallows al fresco.
Out and About
There's no shortage of things to see and do nearby, from picturesque villages to exhilarating country walks. Just down the lane you'll find the tiny village of Lanreath (there's a small community shop here - handy for everyday essentials), and a ten-minute drive will take you to either the harbour town of Looe, which boasts a sandy beach, bustling streets and a choice of diving and fishing trips, or unspoilt Polperro, with spectacular views and an array of shops, galleries and places to eat and drink. You might choose to tramp the coastal path, perhaps exploring woodland walks inland, via the beaches at Talland Bay and Lansallos, or hop over to the impressive Boconnoc Estate, where there are gardens to wander and miles of footpaths to enjoy. One thing's for sure, you won't run out of picturesque destinations in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
